What to Feed a Guinea Pig
So you have a new guinea pig? You are lucky, because they are sweet little animals. They are friendly and social and make a purring noise when they’re happy. And if you’ve got a male and a female, get ready for more, because when they get really social they can breed like rabbits.
A guinea’s natural diet is grass. It helps their digestion and keeps their teeth from growing too long. Commercial guinea pig pellets will likely be most of your pigs’ diet, and they are made of grass, but you should still provide your guineas with some real grass too. Alfalfa, orchard grass or timothy grass hay are all good. Fresh fruits and vegetables are an important addition to a guinea’s diet. Leafy greens, carrots, peas and corn are all good. And on the fruit side, try grapes, apples, pears or orange slices. Guinea pigs cannot produce their own vitamin C, so you need to give it to them. If you don’t feed them enough fruit, you can buy special vitamin C tablets that are made just for guineas. They’re like Flinstone vitamins for rodents. And of course, don’t forget the water bottle. Your guineas need fresh water available at all time. br> We’ve tried to find the best sources we can for the information above, but don’t rely on us. Always consult a veterinarian, professional trainer or other expert. Comments
