Treating Your Hamster
Food treats will make a hamster happy, but too many treats can make the little guy ill.
When your hamster first comes home with you, regular treats can help him quickly feel comfortable with you. After the first few days, though, a Syrian hamster’s daily treats should, all together, be no larger than a lima bean. Dwarf hamster should take even less – about a green (English) pea’s worth. A hamster who gets too much will probably get unhealthily fat, and he may hoard the extra until it rots, exposing him to harmful bacteria. There are plenty of foodstuffs to choose from. Raisins and carrots make good sweet treats. Green leafy vegetables give him something to work on. Nuts and beans, chicken or eggs, even boiled potatoes and bread make good hamster rewards. Whatever you give him, please don’t make it chocolate, raw kidney beans, candy, garlic or onions, and remember to wash vegetables and fruits to remove pesticides. We went to reliable sources for the above information, but don’t forget – we’re just cats and dogs. Always consult a veterinarian, professional trainer or other expert. Comments
