In March it was reported that a number of brands of pet foods made by Menu Foods were recalled due to possible toxic contamination.  This list was expanded in April to include several other manufacturers.  Most of the contaminated products are wet food for dogs and cats, but there are now dry foods and pet treats included on the list.

Tests by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have suggested that wheat gluten, used as an ingredient to thicken gravy, may have been contaminated with Melamine.  This investigation is ongoing.

 

How To Identify Pet Foods Affected By This Recall:

  • Look for the foods you feed your pet on a searchable list created by the FDA
  • Check against this master list of affected pet products from the American Veterinary Medicine Association (AVMA)
  • Look up the list of affected dog products from Menu Foods
  • Check the list of affected cat products from Menu Foods
  • Go to the Iams' food recall page
  • Go the Royal Canin web site (cats)
  • Go to the Natural Balance web site
  • Check the Del Monte web site
  • Purina has links to their recall efforts on their home page
  • Hills has information available on their home page
  • Nutro Products has made this statement

 

How to Figure Out if Your Pet Has Been Affected:

  • See the AVMA FAQ Page for a list of symptoms to watch out for.  Possible symptoms include “Signs of illness include loss of appetite, lethargy, depression, vomiting, diarrhea, sudden changes in water consumption, or changes in the frequency or amount of urination. These signs may also occur with other illnesses. Any animal showing these signs should be examined by a veterinarian, even if the animal has not eaten any of the recalled pet food.”  Source:  AVMA
