Training Your Cat to ComeEven more than with dogs, the key to training cats is positive reinforcement. Reprimanding a cat will get you nowhere, but rewarding a cat with a delicious treat might just lead to the behavior you seek. The key is to teach the cat to associate the desired act (using the litter box, staying off your bed) with the pleasure of a reward. For example, if you want to train your cat to come when called, start by finding a treat that is irresistible. Tuna? Chicken? You know best. Then pick a word to use as the call. “Here kitty” is a classic, but maybe you prefer “Gato now!” Anything will work, but be consistent, and try to use a high voice, since that registers better with cats. Start by standing by the cat bowl, which will predispose your cat to heading that way. Issue your call, and when the cat arrives, give him or her the treat and some praise. If you start doing this at feeding time, and then move to different times and places, you should be able to quickly train your cat to come on command. Again, the key is using positive reinforcement. We’ve tried to find the best sources we can for the information above, but you should always consult a veterinarian, professional trainer or other expert. Comments
