The reality is that cats have a wide range of personalities, and some cats simply aren’t very friendly or affectionate. But here are various techniques that people have used to get their cats to cuddle more, or at least to scratch less.

Try playing with your cat using toys. This will help your cat associate you with fun. But don’t play too rough. You want to be thought of as fun, not as a punching bag.

Another possibility is to get on the floor with your cat and start acting like a cat. You could touch noses or rub faces, if your cat will let you. But remember, on all of these suggestions, let it be on the cat’s terms. Don’t force anything.

For aggressive cats, a spray bottle of water can be an effective lesson-teacher. You can also keep a small towel handy, and throw it on gently on the cat when it is too aggressive. Aggression is often the result of insufficient exercise. Make sure that your cat has plenty of toys and opportunity to use them.
