When Your Cat Has Dry SkinPlenty of cats suffer from dry skin. Symptoms can range from simple white dandruff flakes on the fur, to rashes and even cracked skin or sores. Causes can include bathing, an unbalanced diet, or diseases and parasites. A good groomer can help out with light to moderate cases, but for more serious cases (or if you aren’t sure) the veterinarian should get your first call. Baths are one of the most common causes of feline dry skin. Cats bathe themselves every day, so water baths should be reserved for when you need to remove grease or other substances that your cat may have trouble removing on its own. And if you do bathe your cat, be sure to use shampoos or soaps designed especially for cats, since soaps for humans may be way too harsh. Plenty of people swear by oatmeal-based feline shampoo. Diet, especially a lack of oils or specific nutrients, can also cause a cat’s skin to dry and flake. High-quality, branded cat food, plus a can of sardines (or a bit of tuna oil in the food) twice per month, can keep your cat’s skin and fur healthy and supple. Be sure to consult your veterinarian before feeding your cat supplements. If you have tried these things for a minor condition, and that condition doesn’t get better, bring your cat to a good veterinarian for more help. Never totally trust what you read on the internet. Always consult a veterinarian, professional trainer or other expert. Comments
